International Academic Competitions is pleased to present the debut of the National German Bee in May 2023! This online event will give individual students from around the USA a chance to compete for the first-time ever on pyramidal tossups* written exclusively in German. Topics will include history, geography, literature, the arts, music, business and economy, travel and tourism, popular culture, cooking, and other aspects of life in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Questions will be read by native speakers, professors and teachers of German, and other people who have excellent German pronunciation skills. Preliminary round questions will be read at a particularly slow pace; in the playoff rounds, the tempo will be somewhat quicker. Please note that the Bee is meant only for current students of German, not native or near-native speakers. This event is primarily geared towards students in the USA, though students from other countries are welcome to compete as well.
The National German Bee does not require prior qualification. A file containing a subject distribution of the questions and a study syllabus will be provided shortly. The Bee will consist of 3 rounds of 35 questions for preliminary round play and 1 or 2 playoff rounds, depending on field size. The cost will be $25.
* Pyramidal tossups are paragraph length quiz questions that present aspects of a subject in descending order of difficulty, so that students who have deeper knowledge can ring in first with the buzzer and score the point. Diese Online-Veranstaltung gibt einzelnen Schülern aus den ganzen USA die Möglichkeit, zum ersten Mal an Pyramiden-Tossups*, die ausschließlich in deutscher Sprache verfasst sind, gegeneinander anzutreten. Themen sind Geschichte, Geographie, Literatur, Kunst, Musik, Wirtschaft und Wirtschaft, Reisen und Tourismus, Populärkultur, Kochen und andere Aspekte des Lebens in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Die Fragen werden von Muttersprachlern, Professoren und Deutschlehrern sowie anderen Personen mit ausgezeichneten deutschen Aussprachekenntnissen gelesen. Vorrunde Fragen werden in einem besonders langsamen Tempo gelesen; in den Playoff-Runden wird das Tempo etwas schneller sein. Bitte beachten Sie, dass die Bee nur für aktuelle Deutschstudenten gedacht ist, nicht für Muttersprachler oder nahezu muttersprachliche. Diese Veranstaltung richtet sich in erster Linie an Studenten in den USA, aber auch Studenten aus anderen Ländern sind willkommen.
